Guide to Choosing Hardware for New Bathroom Internal Doors

When outfitting bathroom internal doors, selecting the right hardware is crucial for functionality, privacy, and style. Here’s a detailed guide to the essential hardware components: hinges, turn and release mechanisms and bathroom contract locks.

Hinges

Hinges are fundamental to the operation of any door, including bathroom doors. For bathrooms, you’ll need hinges that provide smooth operation, durability in a humid environment, and aesthetic appeal.

Types of Hinges Suitable for Bathroom Doors:

  1. Butt Hinges: The most common type, providing reliable performance for bathroom doors.

    • Material: Stainless steel or brass to resist moisture and corrosion.
  1. Ball-Bearing Hinges: These offer smoother operation and are more durable, ideal for heavier bathroom doors.

    1. Material: Stainless steel or brass.
    2. Size: Typically available in similar sizes to butt hinges (62mm, 76mm, 102mm).
    3. BSEN 1935: It is vital to consider your door weight before purchasing either type of hinge.
      • For doors weighing up to 40kg, we recommend using 3 Grade 7 hinges.
      • For doors weighing up to 80kg, we recommend using 3 Grade 11 hinges.
      • For doors weighing up to 120kg, we recommend using 3 Grade 13 hinges.

Turn and Release Mechanisms

A turn-and-release mechanism provides privacy for bathroom doors without requiring a key. This mechanism typically includes an emergency release feature from the outside.

Key Features:

  1. Ease of Use: Should be easy to turn from the inside and release from the outside in an emergency, most people opt for comfortable thumb turns.
  2. Design: Match the finish and style of other door hardware (antique brass, gold, black & more).
  3. Installation: Ensure compatibility with your bathroom lock and door thickness.

Bathroom Locks

Bathroom contract locks are specially designed for bathroom doors. They combine a latch that can be operated by the handle or with a lock operated by a turn and release mechanism. Something to consider is your door design

If the surface of your door has any grooves or details you may need to measure the backset distance to ensure that the handle fits correctly in the door and doesn't overlap.
